If you've been thinking about making your own Wobbly Squares Blanket, but were not sure how to start, this photo tutorial should get you on the right path. I will take you through the first 3 rows. After that, the pattern should be pretty self-explanatory.
Let's get started!
Here's a hint throughout this pattern: Any time you complete a dc2tog, you will chain 1.
To start, form a magic circle and chain 2 (does not count as a stitch). *Crochet a dc2tog and chain 1.* Repeat from * to * seven times. Slip stitch into the top of the first dc2tog. Fasten off. (8 dc2tog, 8 chain 1s)
Row 1 |
Join to a chain 1 space using the standing dc2tog. |
The dc2tog is completed in the next chain 1 space. |
You can see that a V is formed by the two sides of the 2 separate dc2togs. |
First corner is formed. |
Continue the pattern around so that you have 4 corners separated by 4 Vs. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first dc2tog. To see the rectangle shape, you can stretch out the dc corner spaces.
Now let's start Row 3. Join a new color in a chain 1 space using the standing dc2tog method. Complete the dc2tog in the next chain 1 space.
Chain 1 and start a new dc2tog in the same space. Complete it in the next chain 1 space and chain 1. Continue making dc2tog and chain 1 until you reach the middle V of the corner.
To make the corner, dc, chain 1, dc, chain 1, start next dc2tog in the same space. Complete it in the next chain 1 space.
Dc2tog, chain 1 across ( a total of 3 times) to the next middle V in the corner space. Form next corner. Repeat around. After last dc2tog, chain 1 and slip stitch to the top of the standing dc2tog.
To crochet consecutive rows, begin with a standing dc2tog in a chain 1 space. Dc2tog, chain 1 across until you reach the middle V of a corner. Complete a corner and continue across each side, crocheting corners in the middle V of each corner. The number of dc2togs will increase each row as the square gets bigger and bigger.
When I do the magic circle how many DC or sc do I make when making the circle
ReplyDeleteHi, Tracy,
DeleteYou make a total of 8 dc2tog with chain spaces between them.
I hope this helps!
Simply gorgeous love the colors..also canit be made without the magic ring..mind come out crappy..thanks beverlee.perez1951@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteYou can try chain 4, slip stitch to first chain to make your circle. It won't be as tight, but it will work.
DeleteI am an experienced beginner, I can't do the standing dc no matter how many times I tried and watched every video and web guide. Is there a different way to begin each round.
ReplyDeleteYou could try a join and then a chain 3. I like the standing DC because it hides the start of the round.
DeleteYou can also do a ch 2 then a dc in the same st, it also hides the beginning of the round...just remember when you come back to the beginning of that round to join in the top of the dc that you made at the start of the round, not the ch 2.
DeleteI'm confused, I know how to dc2tog, but how do you do this when you don't have any dc to start with?
ReplyDeleteHi, Jonell,
DeleteIn the pictures above, you can see that each leg of the dc2tog is going into a different stitch. The chain one adds a stitch to gain back the one you lost. Then, starting the next dc2og in the same stitch continues the pattern. Make sure to look at the row above that has pictures in white.
I want to make in one color using variegated yarn. How do I start each round? Do I slip stitch in the ch 1 so where you would attach the new yarn? Then what?
ReplyDeleteAnother ?. Row 2 corner begins with ch1 but row 3 corner begins with a double crochet is this correct?
DeleteHi, Cindy,
DeleteTo follow this pattern using a single yarn, you need to look up my pattern for creating the wobbly screws blanket without changing colors. There's a pattern listed on this blog that teaches you how to do it with variegated yarn or single color.

DeleteThank you. I went and bought 3 colors of LOVE yarn and have 3 rounds done. It's so soft and I'm using a J hook. I had trouble with round 2 getting the end stitches count correct but all is well now.
Deleteis at a loss as how to start this you say ..."""To start, form a magic circle and chain 2 (does not count as a stitch). *Crochet a dc2tog and chain 1.* Repeat from * to * seven times. Slip stitch into the top of the first dc2tog. Fasten off. (8 dc2tog, 8 chain 1s)""""....how do you do this with out a beginning chain to start the dc2tog
ReplyDeleteHi, Debbie,
DeleteThe chain 2 brings you up from the magic circle. It is the beginning chain, but gets hidden when you've crocheted the 8 dc2tog. I hope this helps!
I have the same question as Debbie. How many sc are in your magic circle? Or how many dc? thanks! love the bag. I am looking forward to getting started.
ReplyDeleteHi!
DeleteThere are no single crochets (US terminology). You crochet only the dc2tog stitch 8 times. Here is a link to how you normally do the stitch. Keep in mind that you are doing these in a circle, so you will use your ring rather than having separate chains to crochet into.

So all the dc2tog are all done in the center of the ring?
DeleteHi, I just began this pattern and love it! I just have one question when I'm finishing a row and joining with a slip stitch I seem to have an extra dc2tog on my beginning row. All the other rows are fine. Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteHi, Mary,
DeleteIf you can send me a picture through Facebook, I can see if I can help.
Hi Jennifer, I want to crochet the handbag. Do I have to start with a circle or can I make a straight base.
ReplyDeleteYou could start with a straight base. The handbag starts with a square shape, but you could certainly do a straight base as long as you had the right number of stitches to crochet into. I'd love to see what you come up with.
DeleteI'm confused. The standing DC and the dc2tog are 2 different stitches aren't they? Also as stated abive row 3 corner stArts with DC not chain 1??
